The first walk & fly competition in Espirito Santo - Brazil (Hike and Fly ES), took place from 5 to 7 November 2021. Lucas Porto and Micheli Sossai, the event's organisers, set out to create a format never before seen in Brazil. They opted for more technical, longer events, inspired by the Race to Goal.

The first morning began with a prologue followed by lectures on the history and equipment of marche&vol. The series of lectures ended with a briefing for the first race, and the teams and strategies began to take shape. Over the next two days, Alfredo Chaves (north-east of Rio de Janeiro) enjoyed a great atmosphere with 45 athletes from all over Brazil and a few from abroad.

Divided into two categories, an 'Easy' category for beginners motivated cross-country riders to start practising walk & fly, while the 'Hard' category extracted all that athletes could give. A mix of technical walks and race-to-goal flights made strategic planning essential. The heats consisted of predefined turnpoints, but with the option of crossing them on foot as well. In the 'Easy' category, crossing on foot was optional, with only the first turnpoint being compulsory. In the 'Hard' category, there was more than one turnpoint, requiring athletes to land at the summit or make several climbs.

According to the organisers, the atmosphere at the awards ceremony was euphoric and joyous. From the athletes to the residents, everyone was grateful for what they had experienced.
The Hike and Fly ES competition was marked by days of pure joy and no incidents. Lucas Porto and Micheli Sossai have already set a date for the next edition.
Between April and May 2022, they'll be back!
